Charcoal Toothpaste

One of the most frequent questions I hear from patients is about charcoal toothpaste. Patients are always looking to improve their smile and some people report that charcoal-based toothpaste can whiten teeth. The bottom line is that there are no studies proving that it can whiten teeth. In fact, it could even damage teeth and darken them. The charcoal can be abrasive which can erode the hard outer enamel surface, leaving the more sensitive and yellower dentin exposed. Your best bet is to use an ADA-approved toothpaste. These contain fluoride to help prevent caries and are tested to have very low abrasive qualities. We are happy to review whitening options with you at your next visit.
